My story is not unique. It is a story that I hear repeated over and over again in conversations that I’ve had over the last twelve years of private practice with my patients who have struggled with weight problems. Their story is the same as my story and it goes like this: Repeated failed attempts to affect a permanent weight loss. Having a closet full of 3 or 4 different size clothes due to wide fluctuations in weight. Exercising regularly for extended periods of time without seeing the desired results and then getting frustrated and quitting. Being reluctant to take pictures because we dread looking at an image of ourselves that we don’t like. Struggling to overcome the discouragement that comes when you are trying to solve a problem that doesn’t seem to have a solution. Trying to find the motivation to start yet another diet/exercise/weight loss program. And for me, being a health care professional that people come to for answers but being just as flustered and frustrated as everyone else because I seem to be unable to resolve my own issues about my weight. But my story changed in August 2004 with a decision to make an all out effort to make a permanent change in my life. I was up to a size 46 chest with a 40-inch waist (I’m 5’10 1/2”) and had surpassed my previously highest weight (250 lbs) by 20 pounds. I knew that it was time to change my life. So that’s when I got started. This time, however, had to be distinctively different from all of the countless attempts that I had made in the past. This time I was going to get some help from someone who could teach me what I needed to do to reach my goal of permanent weight loss. During the previous year as I was struggling to exercise on a regular basis, I had watched Master Wesley Jenkins working with his other clients at Gold’s Gym in Waldorf. Somehow I knew that he was the person I needed to help me. As a matter of fact, I chose him to train me even before I knew his name. Because I had watched him train others for so long, I was reluctant (i.e., too chicken) to ask him to train me before I was in halfway decent shape. So I committed to a regular exercise schedule and gave myself to the end of the year to get ready for Wesley. I approached him at the gym after January 1st to ask him if I could sign on as one of his clients and he was so very friendly and receptive to me that I immediately knew in my heart that I had made the right choice. The rest, as they say is history. While working out with Wesley, I shrank faster than I ever had before on previous programs and now, at age 44, I am more fit than I have ever been in my entire life. Although I have been this size (42 chest, 34 waist) when I was younger, I have more muscular definition now than I’ve never had before, even when I was a teenager! My life has changed permanently. Wesley has taught me that I can never end my fitness quest. It is a life long journey. Once you reach the goal that you have set for yourself, you must set new goals so that you can keep striving and moving forward. With this understanding firmly fixed in my mind and heart, and weekly workouts with Wesley, I know I will never return to my former life as an overweight person. I am thankful to God for placing someone in my life like Master Wesley Jenkins. It has truly been an answer to prayer.
